This church has been built between the XII and XIII century, every century and each domination left their own mark. After the last renovation in 1930 the Cathedral facade appears with a neo-Romanesque style. On the inside a special artistic value is shown by the Crypt of the Martyrs and the big pulpit with the two lions besides the altar, gift of Pisa to the city.
The Cathedral is divided in three halls with six lateral chapels. From the central hall you have a rich and grand view of the entire church. It is at the same time very elegant thanks to its slim and tall arches structures and to its baroque style pillars.
At the entrance there are two elegant 1600 holy water fonts. The pavement of the Dome, in a multicoloured marble, has been refurbished in 1956 trying to reproduce the ‘600 original design.
The presbiterio, fenced by a multicoloured balustrade, was built in 1614 with marble from Sicily by the Bishop Francisco De Esquivel. The presbiterio is a meter higher then the church floor; and underneath it was dug on the rock the sanctuary of the Martyrdoms of Cagliari.
At the bottom of the presbiterio stairs you can admire four magnificent lions, than bring us back to the half of the sec. XII.
They are surely among the most beautiful and artistic Lions ever created by the romantic Italy and in Europe of the time.
They probably represent four Gospels and the animals bite into represents heresies. |
