Monument Address: Piazza Palazzo, Cagliari, Historic Centre. It is near Palazzo De Candia, only 5 minutes walk away.

This monument dates back to Catalan- Aragonese origins,(XIV century) and it used to be the seat of the viceroy. Later it was used for administrative and political proposes.

The present facade has been restored in the 1769 by the intervention of the”Savoia family”. Between 1799 and 1815 it hosted the Royal Family of Savoy exiled from Turin during the French occupation. It was then acquired by the Provincial Administration in 1885 and went through some changes, the most important of which was the addition of the “Aula Consiliare” (Council Hall).

Partially destroyed during second World War bombings in 1943, it has been restored on one side and has been replaced by a stunning panoramic square where there is now also a lift connecting the top of the district of Castello with Viale Regina Elena.

It is also worth visiting the Royal Apartments and the picture gallery with the viceroy portraits.
